Photos that "capture the almost mythical time and place, one which has both disappeared and remains the same.
The society this fall published a handsome, page plus coffee table book, "A Village Love Affair: Rollie McKenna's Stonington," filled with McKenna's photographs Stonington people, places and events. The black and white photos, one more captivating than the next, include everything from a mason smoothing concrete at Water St. Several color photos are also included in the book. He'll be sure to have plenty of copies of the book with him.

He was one of the editors of the book and conducted more than 20 oral history interviews about McKenna in the past year and a half. She knew how to get people to relax. McKenna, who died in , took her first literary portrait in — of Truman Capote in Florence. In , the Rosalie Thorne McKenna Foundation donated a collection of more than 1, of her photos to the society. Since then, the society's staff and board members have been working on ways to present the photographs, which depict "a way of life in Stonington Village that is gone but not quite forgotten.
Soon after the award of the grants, the McKenna Foundation donated the remainder of McKenna's archive, including thousands of negatives, prints, journals, and personal effects to the library.

The exhibit — the society's first major exhibit in 20 years — has allowed the society to maximize the use of its library, Kepple said, and "the ability to have it function as a fine arts gallery. It's been a big year for women. We want women to get more of the spotlight. We've seen a major spike in interest. Woolworth Librarian Chelsea Ordner said the exhibit has brought in visitors who have never been to the library before.
In addition to documenting Stonington's small-town way of life, Kepple said, McKenna, who lived in Stonington for much of her life, participated in Stonington's once-flourishing arts scene alongside artists such as poet James Merrill, author Eleanor Perenyi and her own mother, the novelist Grace Stone.
The exhibit, which opened in November at The Richard W. Voting closes on Monday and the selection will be announced on Thursday. The nominees for the week ending November 2 are:.
